Bangladeshi teacher gets life jail for raping pupil

Xinhua, May 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

A court in Bangladesh capital Dhaka has sentenced a school teacher to life imprisonment for raping a five-year-old student.

The teacher, 24-year old Minhaz Uddin, was convicted for raping the girl on March 11, 2014 in a trial that lasted over one year.

The convict was a teacher to the victim at a school in Dhaka at the time the incident occurred.

Tanjina Ismail, judge of the fifth women and child repression prevention tribunal, handed down the verdict with the teacher in the dock on Tuesday.

The judge also fined him 200,000 taka (about 2,564 U.S. dollars) .

If he cannot pay the fine, according to the verdict, Uddin would have to spend another three years in prison.

The verdict came amid the furore over the gang rape of a tribal girl in Dhaka last week in a running micro-bus. Endi
