Britain's southeastern coast hit by moderate tremor

Xinhua, May 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Britain's Southeastern coast on Friday morning, according to the information released by the British Geological Survey (BGS).

The epicenter of the tremor was located approximately seven km south of Ramsgate, Kent, data from the BGS showed.

Local police said no injuries or structural damage had been reported.

So far, over 1,000 felt reports from an automatic online questionnaire survey have been received from members of the public, almost all of them coming from within a 75 km radius of the epicenter, the BGS said.

Almost all of the reports indicated that people were awoken from their sleep, while more than half of the reports described the shaking strength of the earthquake to be moderate, according to the survey.

Some 200 earthquakes were recorded every year in Britain, most of them were tremors of smaller magnitudes than Friday's earthquake, according to the BGS.

In 1931, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake was recorded off East Anglia at Dogger Bank, which was by far the biggest one in the country. Endit
