U.S. stocks open mixed on inflation figure

Xinhua, May 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. stocks opened mildly mixed on Friday, as investors digested inflation data ahead of Fed Chair Janet Yellen's speech.

The Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers increased 0.1 percent in April on a seasonally adjusted basis, the U.S. Labor Department said Friday.

Over the last 12 months, the all items index declined 0.2 percent before seasonal adjustment.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.3 percent in April and led to the slight increase in the seasonally adjusted all items index.

Investors will focus on Yellen's speech on the economy afternoon.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 14.08 points, or 0.08 percent, to 18,271.66. The S&P 500 shed 2.09 points, or 0.10 percent, to 2,128.73. The Nasdaq Composite Index went up 3.99 points, or 0.08 percent, to 5,094.79.

U.S. stocks ended modestly higher on Thursday, with the S&P 500 eking out its 10th closing record for 2015, as investors expected the Fed would delay rate hikes following the release of a batch of generally downbeat economic data. Endit
