Heavy rain forecast for much of Austria

Xinhua, May 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

A trough coming from the Adriatic Sea up through Austria's southeast is expected to bring heavy rain in most of the country that will last until Saturday, the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics reported.

Meteorologist Thomas Turecek said rain will particularly affect Burgenland, Salzburg, parts of Tyrol and Carinthia, Vienna, Styria, and Lower Austria.

Turecek said he expects 20 to 40 mm of rainfall on average, in some areas even 70 mm. He added that some flooding and the development of moors are possible.

Temperatures are also to remain cool, reaching a maximum of 17 degrees Celsius.

Sunday is expected to bring some relief with rains easing, and warmer weather with partial sunshine to arrive by Pentecost Monday.

The weather in the country has already been cooler and rainy in recent days, particularly in parts of Tyrol and Carinthia where the usual average rainfall for the month of May has occurred within only one or two days. Endit
