Jet2.com, a British low-cost airline, began operating flights to Malta with its flight LS 573 landing at the Malta International Airport on Thursday evening.

The journey took 3 hours and 50 minutes to complete the flight distance of 2,463 km from Newcastle to Malta.

Steve Heapy, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays CEO, said: "We're delighted to bring our low fares, trustworthy package holidays and friendly service to Malta. As our first flights arrive in Malta, we're already launching our Summer 2016 program and look forward to growing our product in Malta and Gozo."

Maltese Minister for Tourism Edward Zammit Lewis said the government viewed air route development as a pillar of growth in tourism.

Jet2.com will be operating low fare flights and package holidays from East Midlands, Manchester, Leeds Bradford and Glasgow airports to Malta. It is the third airline marking its inaugural flights this year in Malta. Endit
