Campaign group calls for mediation efforts in Africa

Xinhua, May 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

"I Meditate Africa", a campaign promoting peace across Africa, on Monday urged Africans to take part in meditation efforts as part of mainstream peace building in the continent during Africa Month.

The campaign is aimed at getting 500,000 people to meditate for peace in Africa as part of celebrations of Africa Month.

"We are happy to invite you to attend Public Peace Initiatives on the 23 May 2015, where over 20 African countries will be lead into a peace meditation via webcast," said a press release issued in Cape Town by organizers of the campaign.

Planned events are to take place in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and other cities across the African continent on May 23.

The theme for this year's Africa Month is: "We are Africa - Opening the doors of learning and culture to promote peace and friendship from Cape to Cairo".

May 25 has been designated as Africa Day, an annual commemoration of the 1963 founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU).

Over 500 studies from more than 200 international universities, including Princeton and Harvard, have scientifically proven that meditations can improve the quality of life for everyone. At a time where violence, misunderstanding and lack of human values are dominant, citizens of South Africa and Africa are getting together to do something positive, uniting people on a deeper level through the power of collective consciousness, the press release said.

In 2013, an estimated 10,000 people from 23 African countries, 30 African cities and 54 countries outside the continent were led into the largest peace meditation for Africa.

In 2014 again, during Africa Month, 100,000 people across 23 African countries meditated for peace for Africa. Endi
