Latvia's presidential election to take place on June 3

Xinhua, May 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Latvia's next president will be elected on June 3 this year, the parliamentary press service said on Monday.

Lawmakers are expected to elect the new Latvian president in a secret ballot at an extraordinary parliament session called by the Latvian parliament presidium.

Although the official nomination of presidential candidates will take place from Tuesday to Sunday, May 19-24, political parties have already announced their presidential nominees.

The ruling centrist Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) has named Defense Minister Raimonds Vejonis as its presidential candidate, and the ruling center-right Unity has endorsed his candidacy.

The right-wing National Alliance, the third partner in Latvia's government coalition, has proposed Egils Levits, a judge at the European Court of Justice, for the Latvian presidency, and the opposition leftist Harmony party has named member of parliament Sergejs Dolgopolovs for the top post.

The parliament is due to elect Latvia's next president this year as incumbent President Andris Berzins' four-year term in office ends in the summer. Berzins has decided not to seek a second term in office. Endit
