Portugal opens inquiry after Benfica celebrations turn ugly

Xinhua, May 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Portugal's ministry of internal administration said on Monday it is opening an inquiry after a riot police office violently attacked a Benfica fan after last night's title win, local media reported.

The incident took place on Sunday night after Benfica celebrated its first consecutive league title since 1984, outside the D. Afonso Henrique stadium in Guimaraes, around 360 km north from Lisbon.

A source from the internal administration said the agent has been identified, according to local media.

The Benfica fan, Jose Magalhaes, a businessman, was heard at the Guimaraes court on Monday and was accused of spitting at the police official, but he has denied such allegations.

A video showing the policeman violently targeting the Benfica fan, in front of his young son, who was held down by the police, has gone viral.

On Sunday Portugal' central Marques de Pombal square flooded with riot police clashing against football fans. Endit
