Tokyo stocks rise 0.83 pct on firm company earnings, overseas market gains

Tokyo stocks rose 0.83 percent Friday as investor sentiment was lifted by firm Japanese companies' earnings and U.S. and European stocks gains.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 162.68 points, from Thursday at 19,732.92. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 15.62 points, or 0. 98 percent, to 1,607.11.

Gainers were led by services, land transport and retail issues.

The turnover was 2,577.54 billion yen (about 21.59 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
