Tokyo stocks open lower on weaker U.S. sales data

Tokyo stocks opened slightly lower in early trading Thursday on weaker-than-expected U.S. retail sales data released overnight.

At 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 74.35 points, or 0.38 percent, from Wednesday to 19,690.37. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 3.51 points, or 0.22 percent, to 1,600.70.
