UN chief meets with Xinhua News Agency President

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Wednesday met with Xinhua News Agency President Cai Mingzhao at the UN headquarters in New York City.
While noting that Xinhua has been extensively covering UN affairs, Ban spoke highly of Xinhua's reports on the UN as well as its cooperation with relevant UN agencies.
Ban said he fully supports the cooperation between Xinhua and the UN and hopes that the UN can work with Xinhua to spread the message of peace and development to the whole world.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN as well as of the victory of the world anti-fascist war, said Ban, adding in the wake of the catastrophe 70 years ago, that the international community created the UN to prevent the tragedy from happening again and move forward to a better future.
Cai said that Xinhua attaches great importance to the coverage of UN affairs and has established exchanges and cooperation with the UN system, including the UN Secretariat as well as its affiliated agencies.
Xinhua signed Memorandums of Understanding on strategic cooperation with nine UN agencies and have launched global welfare campaigns to focus on global concerns including children, poverty and environment, he said.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN, Cai said Xinhua will report the achievements the UN has made in safeguarding world peace and promoting international development over the past 70 years.
Xinhua will also lead people all over the world to look into the future of this organization through its stories, he added.
Also present at the Wednesday meeting were UN Under-Secretary- General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General Joseph Reed, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General Iqbal Riza, UN Under- Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Cristina Gallach and UN Assistant Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General Kim Won-soo.
