Indian former chief minister acquitted in graft case

Xinhua, May 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

The High Court in the southern Indian state of Karnataka Monday acquitted former Chief Minister of the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa, in a graft case.

The 67-year-old leader of the regional AIADMK party had appealed to the High Court against her conviction in an 18-year- old corruption case by a special court last year.

Jayalalithaa, who had to step down as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following the conviction with a four-year jail term, has been out on bail granted to her by the country's Supreme Court.

The former Tamil actress can now return as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as the conviction of hers, including three others, has been overturned by the High Court.

The corruption case involves possession of assets by Jayalalithaa disproportionate to her known sources of income, a claim denied by the former Chief Minister.

Local TV channels showed footage of her supporters celebrating the acquittal in the corruption case that has been a bone of contention between the ruling party and the main opposition DMK party.

It was the DMK party which had lodged the case against her when it was in power in the state. Endi
