Vietnamese policemen bust mega gambling den in Ho Chi Minh City

Xinhua, May 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hundreds of policemen have suddenly stormed into a heavy-security building in Ho Chi Minh City, detaining 70 gamblers, local online newspaper reported Monday.

The crack-down took place on May 9 afternoon in the city's Binh Thanh District at the building of a 43-year-old local man named Nguyen Hoang Kiet.

Policemen broke the gate's lock, disabled four surveillance cameras, caught dozens of local people gambling in the forms of card playing and betting on cock fighting. They confiscated four swords, 4,000 U.S. dollars, over 125 million Vietnamese dong, 60 mobile phones and nearly 80 motorbikes.

The gambling den's organizer, Hoang Kiet, confessed that he has run the den in an area of 2,000 square meters surrounded by canals and residential houses for more than one year, luring many gamblers who have criminal records.

Gambling, except in government licensed casinos, is illegal in Vietnam. Anyone found to be in violation of this law is subject to steep fines and/or a severe prison sentence. Access to licensed casinos is restricted to holders of foreign passports. Endi
