S. African president to attend WWII commemoration in Moscow

South African President Jacob Zuma is to attend the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War in Moscow, at the invitation of his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, an official statement said on Thursday.

The visit will further cement the strong and warm relations between South Africa and Russia through cooperation in political, economic, social, defence and security areas, the presidency said.

The annual Victory Day Celebrations on May 9 marks the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany during the Second World War.

Invitations to attend the military parade in Moscow have been sent to 68 heads of state.

So far, leaders of about 30 countries have confirmed plans to attend the celebrations.

Zuma will be accompanied by Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation and Nosiviwe Mapisa- Nqakula, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans. Endi
