Vietnam suspends poultry imports from U.S. for avian influenza fears

Xinhua, May 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Vietnam decided to suspend imports of poultry products from the United States for fears of avian influenza H5N2.

Accordingly, Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has paused licensing for imports of poultry meat and eggs from the United States since May 1.

Products under purchasing contracts signed before May 1 and shipments which are en route to Vietnam will be allowed to pass customs with tightened quarantine checks, said Vietnam's state-run television VTV on Thursday.

Avian influenza H5N2 outbreaks have spread in much of the western and mid-western United States since mid-December 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to statistics of Vietnam Customs, in the first three months of 2015, Vietnam imported over 34,000 tons of frozen chickens from markets, mostly legs, wings, heads and feet, posting an increase of 46 percent year-on-year. The United States is among major suppliers of poultry meat for Vietnam. Endi
