South Korea's experts on inter-Korean affairs believed that the government needs to lift sanctions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to resume the stalled inter- Korean economic cooperation, a survey showed Thursday.

Six out of 10 South Korean experts on DPRK issues believed that top priority should be put on the elimination of the May 24 sanctions to expand inter-Korean economic cooperation, according to the Hyundai Research Institute (HRI)'s survey of 69 experts. (S. Korea-DPRK-Sanctions)

KATHMANDU -- The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Nepal soared to 8, 413 on Wednesday, the update from the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) said.

The earthquake response 2015 report of NRCS said a total 17,576 others were injured and 260 people still missing in the quake. ( Nepal-Toll)

SYDNEY -- An earthquake of 7.2 magnitude jolted 149 km SW of Panguna, Papua New Guinea on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 22.1 km, was initially determined to be at 7.3 degrees south latitude and 154.5 degrees east longitude. (Papua New Guinea-Earthquake)

GHAZNI, Afghanistan -- A total of 21 militants have been killed and seven others injured as security forces launched cleanup operations in Nawa district of Ghazni province with Ghazni city as its capital, 125 km south of Kabul on Thursday,a senior official of national army in the province said.

"Units of national army launched cleanup operations in Nawa district in the wee hours of Thursday and so far 21 rebels have been killed and seven others injured," Brigadier Fazal Khuda told Xinhua. (Afghanistan-Attack-Toll)

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong Customs has foiled a suspected smuggling attempt and seized about 4 million HK dollars (about 520,000 U.S. dollars) worth of unmanifested electronic products from two sampans, it said here Thursday.

The customs officers discovered two sampans, each loaded with 23 cartons of unmanifested goods on board, in a small river at Tai Sang Wai, Yuen Long early Wednesday. (Hong Kong-Smuggling-Haul) Endit
