Scariolo returns as Spain basketball coach

Xinhua, May 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Spanish Basketball Federation on Thursday confirmed Sergio Scariolo as the new coach of the Spanish national basketball team.

The Italian, who is one of the most successful coaches in the history of the Spanish game, returns to the job which saw him lead Spain to gold medals in the 2009 and 2011 European Championships and also to the silver medal in the 2012 Olympic Games held in London, where only the United States were able to deny Spain the gold.

His 70 games in charge between 2009 and 2012 saw the Spanish win 80 percent of their matches.

Scariolo now has the task of lifting the Spanish following their disappointments in the 2014 World Cup which saw the Spanish crash out of the quarter-finals of the competition held on home soil and preparing them for this summer's European Championship and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Endi
