Rebels in Ukraine's Lugansk mull declaring martial law

Xinhua, May 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

The self-styled leader of the self- proclaimed Lugansk People's Republic in eastern Ukraine Igor Plotnytsky on Tuesday signed a decree to declare a martial law in the "republic" if an "aggression" against it arises.

The decree said that the martial law could be declared by Plotnytsky at any time when "there is a possibility of provocations by the Ukrainian Armed Forces."

The special regime envisages that a partial military mobilization would be held in the self-proclaimed republic and a curfew would be established in some territories.

The martial law also stipulates that arms and alcohol sales would be prohibited in the area, while all public gatherings would be allowed only after the approval from the leadership of independence-seeking insurgents.

Armed activists in Lugansk and its neighboring Donetsk regions established "people's republics" in April last year and declared independence from Kiev, provoking a violent confrontation with government forces.

At least 6,100 people were killed and more than 15,400 others wounded in the conflict, according to the latest United Nations estimates. Endite
