Uganda to play in Rwanda genocide memorial football tournament

Xinhua, May 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda will join Burundi, Kenya and host Rwanda in a Rwanda Genocide Invitational football tournament slated for June 6-7 in the capital Kigali, a senior sports official said here on Tuesday.

Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic, the Head Coach of Uganda's national football team Cranes told Xinhua that the national team will take part in the event held in honor of players, coaches, fans and administrators that were killed during the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.

Micho said Uganda will use the match as preparation for the 2016 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier.

"The event will be very good to prepare our players ahead of the preliminary qualifier game against Tanzania on June 20," added the Serbian born coach.

The CHAN tournament is meant for players featuring in their respective home Leagues. Uganda Cranes featured in the second edition of the event in 2011 in Sudan and last year in South Africa where they failed to qualify out of the Group stages on the two occasions. Endite
