World No. 1 Ding Ning, who asked for medical attention in the deciding set, beat fellow Chinese Liu Shiwen 4-3 (7-11, 15-13, 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 4-11, 11-8) to win her second world championship singles title on Saturday.

Ding, the 2011 winner, fell after trying in vain to retrieve a wide-angled shot by the second-ranked Liu, and clutched her right ankle in agony. Team doctor took care of the sprained ankle for 10 minutes.

When Ding returned with 0-2 down, a distracted Liu failed to widen the angle of her shots and began to make mistakes, letting a slightly limping Ding to edge ahead.

Liu twice sent the ball to the net and hit six shots wide since 3-3.

A shot wide followed by a hit into the net cost Liu her first world singles title.

Chinese Mu Zi and Li Xiaoxia finished joint third. Endi
