Several injured in right-wing attack on May Day demonstration in Germany

Police have arrested dozens of nationalists Friday after they interrupted a May Day demonstration and injured several people in the German city of Weimar.

Fifteen people were injured when right-wing extremists tried to break up a May Day trade union gathering on Friday in Weimar, local police were quoted by media as saying.

A parliamentarian of Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) tweeted that at least 40 people had attacked him while he was giving a speech. Also Weimar's mayor was reportedly injured in the violence, which has led to a total of 29 arrests.

Demonstrations by trade unions are a traditional part of the May Day holiday in Germany. Similar events have taken place in many other cities, including Berlin, Munich, Essen, Duesseldorf and Cologne.

According to the trade unions, around 400,000 people across the country have participated in May Day demonstrations on Friday. Endit
