Cuba ratifies solidarity with Venezuela on Labor Day

Xinhua, May 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cuba ratified its support to Venezuela against U.S. sanctions on Friday during rallies held throughout the island to mark the International Workers' Day.

The major demonstration in Havana was chaired by President Raul Castro, accompanied by his counterpart from Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, a main political and economic ally of Cuba.

Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, general secretary of the Workers' Central Union of Cuba (CTC), reiterated in his speech Havana's support to the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela and its leaders against the unilateral sanctions imposed by Washington.

"We ratify our support to Venezuela, its Bolivarian Revolution, its civil-military union led by President Maduro, and the loyalty to the memory of leader Hugo Chavez, the best friend Cuban ever had," said Guilarte.

On March 9, the United States declared Venezuela as an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to U.S. security. A few hours after the imposition of the U.S. new sanctions on Caracas, Cuba issued a statement ratifying its "unconditional support" to Venezuela and the government led by Maduro.

This is the first May Day parade in Cuba after it started the process for restoring diplomatic ties with its former ideological enemy -- the United States.

Cuba celebrates the International Workers' Day since 1890. Endi
