Slovak trade union demands minimum wage rise

Xinhua, April 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

The minimum wage should be raised to 410 euros (443 U. S. dollars) per month, Slovak Trade Union Confederation (KOZ) representatives stated at a press conference on Tuesday.

KOZ vice-president Slavomir Manga said the confederation is ready to discuss such an increase with the social partners.

"We'd like to achieve this, mainly to make sure that people don't fall below the poverty threshold," stressed Manga, adding that the poverty line for 2014 amounted to 353 euros (382 U. S. dollars) per month.

The confederation is convinced that an increase in the minimum income level won't have any negative impacts on businesses and employment.

"Every year, we hear the same arguments that competitiveness is being curbed due to the minimum wage, but nobody has proved this objectively," stressed Manga.

The Slovak Government is also planning another increase in the minimum wage. Prime Minister Robert Fico has envisaged that the acceptable level for his Cabinet is up to 400 euro (432 U. S. dollars). The minimum wage in Slovakia increased as of January from 352 to 380 euros ( 382 to 411 U. S. dollars) per month. Endit
