Libya adjourns trial of Gaddafi era officials to May 3

An appeals court in Libyan capital Tripoli on Monday adjourned until May 3 the trial of 37 figures of the late ruler Muammar Gaddafi regime, according to an official in the attorney general's office.

The court also set May 3 as a final date of the defense pleading of Gaddafi regime officials, Al-Seddig Al-Sur, chief of investigations office of the attorney general's office, told Xinhua.

"In case no obstructions of any kind occurred, the next hearing will determine the date of the sentencing session by the court for all the 37 defendants pending case 630/2012," Al-Sur added.

The 37 officials face charges of killing and repressing demonstrators during the 2011 uprising that toppled the Gaddafi regime, as well as contribution to genocide and besieging towns and villages that protested against Gaddafi regime.

A number of Gaddafi era officials, including two of his sons Saif al-Islam and al-Saadi, remain in detention at Libyan prisons for several charges, including suppressing, killing and incitement to killing demonstrators, embezzling public money, and forming armed battalions to repress protesters in February 2011.
