Indonesia strongly condemns bombing in Yemeni capital Sana

Xinhua, April 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indonesia strongly condemned recent bomb attack in Yemeni capital of Sana on Monday that injured some of its diplomats serving in that country and damaged the embassy premises located in downtown area of the city.

"Besides injuring the Indonesian diplomatic staffs and the embassy's premises, the bombing also severely damaged our embassy' s cars parked in and around the area," Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said as quoted by a statement released by her ministry.

Citing a preliminary information, the statement said the bombing was targeting ammunition storage facility located in the embassy's vicinity. The bombing was feared to have also injured and killed dozens of civilians in the area.

When the bombing took place earlier in the morning, some 17 diplomatic staffs and Indonesian nationals took shelter in the embassy premises. All of those people, including the injured ones who consisted of two diplomatic staffs and a civilian, had been evacuated to the ambassador's residence. They would be evacuated to Al Hudaidah later on, the minister said.

"The Indonesian government affirmed that bombing proves that settling the problems through violence would only hurt the innocent. Indonesia emphasizes that diplomatic solution through peace talks is the best way to solve conflict," the minister said.

She urged all parties involved in the arm conflicts should immediately end the violence acts, asking for a truce period for humanity so as to provide ample time for foreign nationals to get out from Yemen and at the same time allow foreign humanitarian aids to enter the country.

Indonesia also urged the conflicting parties to respect international regulation and laws and the United Nations (UN) resolution related to civilian protection.

Saudi Arabian-led joint airstrike has been actively conducting bomb attacks against Shiite radical group of Al Houthi who took over Yemeni government.

The bombings, that have been conducted in the last three weeks, occurred in several parts of Yemen believed to be controlled by Al- Houthi militiamen.

Indonesia is in the middle of process in evacuating its nationals from Yemen at the moment. It recently sent air forces' passenger plane to pick up its nationals who were previously evacuated to Oman and Saudi Arabia. A total of 1973 Indonesian nationals have been returned back to Indonesia from Yemen since last December. Endi
