Ten terror suspects were arrested and their explosives, bomb detonators and a black flag used by Al-Shabaab militants seized on Tuesday, police in Tanzania have said.
Leonard Paul, Morogoro regional police commander, told a news conference that the suspects were nabbed when they emerged from a mosque carrying the devices at Nyandero village in Kilombero district.
One of the suspects was killed by the public after he slashed a police officer with a machete, Paul said.
"We arrested the suspects after we had received a tip-off from a Good Samaritan about the movement of the suspects," he said.
The arrest of the suspects came a week after a Tanzanian named Rashid Charles Mberesero was detained in Kenya over the recent terror attack in Kenya's Garissa University.
Rashid, who was detained last week, is believed to have contact with Al-Shabaab gunmen who killed 148 people, mostly students, at the university campus on April 2.
Terror alerts were issued last week in the Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam and the northern tourism town of Arusha on social media. Security has been tightened in regions said to be on the terrorists' hit list which also includes Mwanza on the shores of Lake Victoria.
Public and private institutions also issued advisories and introduced or enforced measures meant to ensure safety. Endi
