EU appoints new special representative for Middle East peace process

The European Union (EU) appointed Fernando Gentilini as the EU Special Representative for the Middle East peace process, the Council of the EU announced on Wednesday.

The tasks of the special representative are to contribute to actions and initiatives leading to a final settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution. Moreover, he would also be tasked with facilitating contact between the parties and contributing to setting up a possible new framework for negotiations, said the Council of the EU in the statement.

Gentilini, a former director for Western Europe, Western Balkans and Turkey for the European External Action Service, has an extensive career in foreign affairs. Gentilini is to take up his duties immediately; his initial appointment lasts until April 30, 2016. Endit
