Xinhua, April 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Visiting United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein has pledged support to Burundi's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the senior UN official said Monday afternoon after meeting the Burundian TRC chairman.

"We feel this Commission (TRC) guided by the Arusha Agreement has a very important job to ensure a long-term reconciliation of the people of Burundi. We will begin very intensive discussions on how we can help the TRC," said the commissioner.

According to Al Hussein, the UN is ready to provide technical and financial support.

"We have a great deal of technical expertise; we have worked on many different countries, we have seen in other countries what we fell works or doesn't work very well," he said.

Al Hussein indicated that the Burundian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has a very important responsibility.

The Burundian TRC was set up in December 2014.

Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein is on a four-day visit in the east African nation since Sunday.

Al Hussein's visit to Burundi is the first on the African continent since he took office on Dec. 1, 2014.

During his visit, the official is expected to meet Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza, senior government authorities, representatives of political parties, representatives of the civil society, members of the National Independent Human Rights Commission (CNIDH), members of the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) and the Chairman of the Constitutional Court.
