Togolese presidential candidates kick off electoral campaigns

Xinhua, April 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Togolese electoral campaigns that kicked off on April 10, picked up over the weekend after the incumbent President Faure Gnassingbe launched his campaigns in Notse region among the Ewe people who are mostly regarded as opposition supporters.

While in the northern region of Notse, Gnassingbe reminded the Ewe people of his policies of peace, reconciliation and development of Togo.

He hailed the quality of the current electoral process and noted that he hoped "there will be no disputes over the winner of April 25 presidential elections."

The president said Togo is in need of stability and peace to attract investments, consolidate the economy and create jobs as well as wealth.

Gnassingbe who is running on the ticket of Union for the Republic party (UNIR), is facing five challengers who include Jean- Pierre Fabre of Combat for Change in 2015 (CAP 2015), Aime Tchabore Gogue of Alliance of Democrats for Integral Development (ADDI), Tchassona Traore Mohamed of Citizens' Movement for Democracy and Development (MCD) and Gerry Taama Komandega of New Togolese Engagement (NET).

Fabre, Gnassingbe's main challenger who came second during the 2010 elections, was on Monday in Kara, a town situated 400 km north of the capital Lome, considered to be a stronghold of the incumbent president.

He appealed to members and supporters of CAP 2015 alliance to massively vote for change come April 25, 2015.

The MCD candidate Tchassona Traore conducted his campaigns on Monday in the Lakes prefecture, some 50 km east of Lome, after holding several meetings on Sunday in Lome suburbs.

The candidate for NET, Gerry Taama, continued with his door-to- door campaign under the slogan "Finally, someone who speaks for the people."

ADDI candidate Aime Gogou headed to Western Plateaux region where he declared that if elected, he will only serve one term during which he will concentrate on institutional and constitutional reforms that will launch Togo's development process.

Just like Gogue, all the other candidates promised to carry out constitutional and institutional reforms.

The campaigns are going on peacefully in various towns where campaign teams of each candidate are using all means to win over voters. Endi
