Lebanese army arrests Syrian "terrorist group leader"

Xinhua, April 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Lebanese Army said Wednesday that it arrested "a terrorist organization leader," a Syrian national, in Bekaa Governorate.

Nabil al-Sadik and his Lebanese associate Ali Ayoub were arrested in the town of bar Elias in Bekaa Governorate, the army said in a communique, adding that both of them "are wanted on arrest warrants."

Al-Sadik is a leader of one of the terrorist organizations operating in the northeastern town of Arsal, it said, without giving more details.

Meanwhile, local media reports identified Sadik as a top commander of the Islamic State (IS) group.

Recently, the IS and al-Qaida linked al-Nusra Front had strong presence in Syria's Qalamoun region near Lebanon's eastern borders.

Both groups have clashed with the Lebanese army since last August when they overran the eastern border town of Arsal and abducted at least 35 Lebanese soldiers and policemen upon their withdrawal after five-day clashes with the army.

The al-Nusra Front later executed four soldiers and the IS beheaded another one. Endit
