American coach to handle Uganda's AfroBasket Championship team

Xinhua, April 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) has announced that they will have an American coach, Paul Johnson, to handle the men and women's teams at the 2015 AfroBasket events in Tunisia and Cameroon.

Ambrose Tashobya, the FUBA President told Xinhua in an interview on Wednesday that having Johnson on board will be a big welcome because of his vast experience in advanced basketball.

"We had a good time with Johnson here in 2013 and he helped the women's team Silverbacks head coach Mandy Juruni to prepare the team for the Zone V Championships that took place in Tanzania," said Tashobya.

Johnson was first here as part of FUBA's partnership with Athletes In Action (AIA) Canada. The Canadian organization runs sports development programs across the world.

"He will start work with the Ugandan coaches and teams on July 1," added the FUBA President.

Uganda have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts and 2011 winners Tunisia, three-time finalists Nigeria and a yet-to-be known wildcard.

The event, which is also a qualifying avenue for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, takes place on Aug. 19-30 in the Tunisian cities of Nabeul and Tunis. The women's event will take place in September in Cameroon. Endite
