U.S., Saudi Arabia target Pakistani charity for supporting terror groups

The United States and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday joined hands in slapping sanctions on a Pakistani charity accused of providing support for terrorist groups.

Al-Furqan Foundation Welfare Trust was targeted for offering funding and other support to terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, the U.S. Department of the Treasury said in a statement.

U.S. and Saudi citizens are barred from doing business with the charity and all of its assets under jurisdiction of the two countries are frozen.

The Treasury described Al-Furqan as a "successor entity" to the Afghan Support Committee and Revival of Islamic Heritage Society branches in Pakistan and Afghanistan, two groups that were branded by Washington as specially designated global terrorists and put on the United Nations al-Qaeda Sanctions List in 2002.

"Today's joint action reflects the strength of U.S. and Saudi cooperation on countering the financing of terrorism," said Adam Szubin, acting under secretary of the Treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence. Endi
