New Sri Lankan gov't satisfied with progress achieved

The new Sri Lankan government said on Tuesday that it is happy with the progress achieved so far since it came to power following the Jan. 8 presidential elections.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament that over the past 88 days, the government has ensured the public were given relief by reducing the cost on essential items.

He said that steps have been taken to win back the confidence the international community had on Sri Lanka and by doing so Sri Lanka is in a position to regain trade concessions from the European Union.

The prime minister added that Sri Lanka is no more seen as a country which violated human rights or took revenge on those who opposed the government.

He said that the government is doing all it can to address the issues of the people in the north of the country who were directly affected by the war.

As part of a 100 Day Program of the government, fuel prices were reduced and free wifi was also offered at public locations.

Over next few days, the government hopes to introduce more relief measures, including a system to increase the salaries of private sector employees, the prime minister said. Endi
