Terrorists plan to set up IS regime in Malaysia: Malaysian police chief

Xinhua, April 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

The 17 terrorists detained by police on Sunday were planning to set up an Islamic State-like regime in Malaysia, Malaysian Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said Tuesday in a statement.

He said the terror cell had planned to kidnap VIPs and raid banks to fund their terror activities, adding that information suggested that they were also planning to raid several army camps and police stations to acquire weapons.

"The locations identified as the cell's terror targets were in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya," Khalid said, adding that it was believed the terrorists received funds from a terror group in a neighboring country.

"Those detained aged between 14 and 49 are being held under Sosma 2012," he said.

According to the statistics given by the police, 92 Malaysians have been nabbed for involvement with militants in Syria since February 2013. Endi
