Chinese in Rwanda commemorate martyr on Tomb Sweeping Day

Xinhua, April 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Dozens of Chinese in Rwanda's capital Kigali went to the Rulindo Chinese martyrs' cemetery to commemorate the Chinese who buried here in the last 40 years on Chinese Qingming Festival, or Tomb Sweeping Day.

Rulindo Chinese martyrs' cemetery was first built in 1982 by China Road and Bridge Corporation for a deceased employee. In 1997, Mr. Chen Jian, another employee of the corporation perished in the line of duty. He was recognized as a martyr and buried here.

From 1982 to 1997, a total of ten Chinese, who passed away while working in aid projects for Rwanda, were buried here.

Chen worked for the Gitarama-Kibuye road construction project. In June 1997, he lost his life while he fought against armed robbers to protect Chinese aid project. Thus, he was conferred the title of the martyr by the Chinese government.

At present, Chinese aid project continue to contribute to Rwanda's development. Roads constructed by Chinese companies are extending throughout the land of thousand hills. The Chinese who rest in this cemetery are testimony of Sino-Rwanda friendship. Endi
