ACCRA, April.31 (Xinhua) – Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Muhammadu Buhari, the president-elect of Nigeria, on his victory and hailed the Nigerian elections as "a triumph for the new Africa that is emerging".
Mahama, who is also chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), hailed Buhari's contribution towards the peaceful conduct of the elections which he said "marks an important milestone, not only in the democratic development of Nigeria but also the continent as a whole".
Buhari, of the Nigerian opposition All Progressives Congress, beat outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential race by about 2.5 million votes.
Mahama commended President Jonathan for his "political maturity and statesmanship", describing his phone call to Buhari where he conceded defeat and congratulated his rival on Tuesday, as "a mark of courage and a respect for the will of the Nigerian people".
He also praised Nigerians for "their determination and courage throughout the election period", which he said show commitment towards strengthening democracy and good governance in the country.
"The ECOWAS urges all political parties, candidates, their supporters and the general public to accept the verdict of Nigeria's electoral commission, and continue to observe the atmosphere of peace", a statement from Mahama said.
Presidential candidate of Ghana's opposition New Patriotic Party Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also congratulated Buhari on his victory. Endi
