Ukraine seeks to sign new gas deal with Russia in mid-April

Xinhua, April 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn said here Wednesday that his country hopes to sign a new deal on natural gas supplies from Russia in mid-April.

"On April 13-14, we expect to sign a document, which would cover the supplies during the period until the end of the heating season of 2016," Demchyshyn told a press conference.

According to him, Kiev hopes that the gas price set in the deal could fall to 250 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic meters, which is about 80 dollars lower than the price Ukraine was paying in the first quarter of 2015.

In the first three months of the current year, Ukraine was importing gas from Russia under a "winter package", which expired on March 31.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow was ready to extend the "winter package" agreement with Ukraine by another three months.

Earlier this week, Ukraine' s Naftogaz proposed extending the gas deal with Russian Gazprom until the end of the next autumn-winter heating season and the Russian side agreed to consider the proposal. Enditem
