Unionists stage further strikes against Belgian economic policies

Xinhua, April 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Trade union strikes against the Belgian government's economic policies are taking place throughout Belgium's predominantly French-speaking region of Wallonia on Wednesday.

The strikes are taking place in the cities of Charleroi, Liege, and Namur.

These actions follow similar demonstrations here on Monday.

The strikes are mainly affecting public transport, with little or no local transport services running. According to the Belgian daily Le Soir, only about 5 percent of transport capacity is operating in Charleroi.

However, in the provinces of Namur and Luxembourg, public transport is not as disrupted, with reports that services are operating at near-full capacity in some parts of Luxembourg.

In addition, mass demonstrations are due to take place in the three main cities of Charleroi, Liege, and Namur, with trade unionists marching through the towns.

In Namur, around 2,000 people are expected to march on the Walloon parliament building. Endit
