Tokyo shares end sharply lower

Tokyo shares ended sharply lower Thursday following big drops in the overnight U.S. stocks market.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average plunged 275.08 points, or 1. 39 percent, from Wednesday at 19,471.12.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 23.19 points, or 1.46 percent, at 1, 568.82.

Decliners were led by shipping, warehousing and air transport issues, while energy and mining were the only gainers.

The turnover was about 2,795.9 billion yen (about 23.41 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
