Senior Ukrainian officials arrested on corruption charges

Two Ukrainian officials were arrested Wednesday on charges of corruption, the government's press service said.

Sergiy Bochkovsky, head of Ukraine's State Service for Emergencies, and his first deputy, Vasyl Stoetsky, were detained and dismissed from their posts.

They were accused of purchasing fuel for the government body at inflated prices from private companies, accepting bribes and laundering money offshore, according an online governmment statement.

Corruption is currently perceived as one of the major challenges for Ukraine's development.

In a global index of perceived official corruption conducted by Transparency International, Ukraine ranked 142nd among 175 countries worldwide in 2014. Endi
