German airline Lufthansa said on Tuesday that it would be a dark day for the company "if our fears are confirmed", referring to the crash of its flight 4U9525 in southern France.

"We do not yet know what has happened to flight 4U 9525," said Lufthansa in its official twitter account, referring to a flight of its budget airline subsidiary Germanwings which was reported to have crashed in southern France earlier on Tuesday.

"My deepest sympathy goes to the families and friends of our passengers and crew on 4U9525. If our fears are confirmed, this is a dark day for Lufthansa. We hope to find survivors," it said.

The flight was en route from Barcelona in Spain to Duesseldorf in Germany. According to media reports, 142 passengers and 6 crew members were on board. Most of the passengers were German tourists. Endit
