Bus accident kills 7, injures 48 in Tanzania's national park

Xinhua, March 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Seven people died on the spot and 48 others were injured on Thursday after two buses collided in the Mikumi National Park, located 280 km west of Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

The accident occurred nine days after 50 people were killed in a horror road accident in Tanzania's southern highlands when their bus collided with a lorry.

Leonard Paul, the Morogoro regional police commander, said the accident was caused by overspeeding of both buses that were being driven on different directions.

He said that the 48 injured passengers were rushed to St. Kizito hospital for first aid treatment before they were transferred to other hospitals for specialized treatment.

Last week, 50 people were killed and more than 20 others were injured after a bus in which they were travelling collided head on with a lorry in Mufindi district after the driver of the lorry had tried to avoid a huge pothole.

In his 2015 New Year message to the east African nation, President Jakaya Kikwete said in 2014 there were 14,048 accidents that caused 3,534 deaths and 16,166 injuries. Endi
