The African Union (AU) on Thursday strongly condemned Wednesday's terrorist attacks in Tunisia that have killed at least 21 people. The pan-African bloc has underlined the need for enhanced inter- African cooperation in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission, has learned with dismay of the terrorist attack perpetrated Wednesday at the Bardo Museum, in Tunis, said the statement from AU. "The Chairperson of the Commission strongly condemns this heinous and cowardly act," said the statement, "She presents AU's heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the people and Government of Tunisia."

The Chairperson expressed AU's solidarity with Tunisia in the tragic moment and its full support to the ongoing efforts to combat the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism.

She urged the people and leadership of Tunisia to persevere in their endeavor to consolidate democracy and promote tolerance in their country.

The Chairperson stressed that the attack that struck Tunisia illustrates once again the need for renewed efforts to strengthen inter-African cooperation in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

She underlined the relevance of AU's normative and institutional framework, as well as that of the decision by its Peace and Security Council at the Summit in Nairobi on Sept. 2, 2014, on the issue of terrorism and violent extremism in Africa. Endi
