Zambia, Tanzania border closed following clashes

Xinhua, March 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

A border entry between Zambia and Tanzania has been closed following clashes on the Tanzanian side of the border, the Times of Zambia reported on Wednesday.

The Nakonde border, situated in northern Zambia, was closed on Tuesday following clashes between supporters of political parties in Tanzania's border town of Tunduma over a disputed piece of land.

Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Bright Nunbwe said authorities closed the border when the situation became violent on the Tanzanian side, affecting hundreds of closer border traders as well as transporters at the busy border.

Zambian police have since been put on alert at the border to ensure that the confusion does not spread to the Zambian side of the border.

The official said the flow of traffic headed into Zambia was affected and tankers carrying petroleum products were restricted to about 10 kilometers from the border to prevent them from being gutted in the fracas.

Scores of cross border traders were stranded with some of them failing to buy merchandise as most of the shops in the Tanzanian border town were closed while about 500 trucks were marooned on the Tanzanian side of the border. Endi
