Sierra Leonean President Koroma sacks VP for seeking asylum in U.S. embassy

Xinhua, March 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma sacked Vice President Alhaji Samuel Sam Sumana for seeking asylum in a foreign embassy, according to a press release issued Tuesday night on the national broadcaster -- Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation.

Sam Sumana had requested asylum at the U.S. embassy in Freetown after soldiers surrounded his residence last week.

The VP who was in self imposed quarantine was expelled from the governing All Peoples Congress party last week for what the party described as falsifying his documents and anti party activities.

"Pursuant to my executive authority as President of Sierra Leone as enshrined in section 41 of the constitution of Sierra Leone and in consultation with the leadership of the All People's Congress, I shall appoint and announce the name of another person as Vice President shortly pursuant to section 54 of the constitution of Sierra Leone Act no. 6," the press release said.
