World Bank to fund rehabilitation of DR Congo airport paralyzed in volcano eruption

Xinhua, March 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The World Bank has agreed to give the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) 52 million U.S. dollars to improve safety, security and operations at the Goma airport in the east of the country.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in Kinshasa by the World Bank's resident representative Ahmadou Moustapha Ndiaye.

"The money will help to rehabilitate the airport after the disaster of Nyiragongo volcanic eruption in February 2002," he affirmed.

A statement from the World Bank said part of the money will go towards rehabilitation of the runway, terminal and the electric system.

The money will equally be used for the construction of a new air control tower, while the rest will go towards the running of the airport by putting in place measures to prevent any accident in case of another volcanic eruption.

Goma airport is the main aerial access point to the east of DR Congo. Endi
