MEPs condemn IS actions against Christians

Xinhua, March 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Members of the European Parliament (MEP) on Thursday strongly condemned the "brutal actions" by Islamic State (IS) extremists against Christians in the Middle East, particularly the Assyrians in Syria and the Copts in Libya.

The European Parliament (EP) stated the "egregious human rights abuses" by IS amounted to crimes against humanity and war crimes that "could be called genocide," and urged the European Union (EU) member countries to take action against the threat of IS expansion into countries and regions beyond Iraq and Syria.

The EP also urged countries in the Gulf region "to stop the financing of terrorist organizations from within their territories." In particular, MEPs expressed concern over the financing of the "dissemination of the Wahhabi interpretation of Islam by public and private entities of countries from the region." Endit
