Bhutan wins World Cup qualifier debut

Xinhua, March 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

FIFA's lowest-ranked soccer team Bhutan, a tiny Himalayan kingdom, won their debut Thursday in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers Thursday by shocking Sri Lanka 1-0 in an away match.

Tshering Dorji scored the lone goal in the 84th minute for Bhutan, which is ranked 209th in FIFA as Asian qualifiers started across the continent.

East Timor and Cambodia were also among the winners in qualifying for the World Cup in Russia. Chiquito do Carmo scored twice in the first half as East Timor beat Mongolia 4-1 in Dili, while Cambodia defeated China's Macao 3-0 in Phnom Penh.

The second leg matches will be played Tuesday with the winners advancing to the second round of qualifying, as well as the next round of qualifying for the 2019 Asian Cup. Endi
