The Singularity Summit Spain, organized by the Singularity University in Silicon Valley, California, opened in the Spanish City of Seville on Thursday.
The summit showcases developments in technology, ranging from self-driving cars to bio-technology, robotics, artificial intelligence and even food developments.
Addressing the event, Seville Mayor Juan Ignacio Zoido said the Singularity University, which collaborates with such institutions as NASA and Google, would change the world of science and that technology would help solve the problems facing the human race.
Dr. Luis Rey, the first vice president of the Goni and Rey foundation -- sponsors of the event -- told Xinhua: "We can expect to see the present, which looks like the future and like science fiction, but it is already here. The coming three days will show how this reality is going to evolve in the coming years."
Rob Nail, associate founder and CEO of Singularity University, discussed the importance of exponential technology, saying it would "change our lives and the way we think of things."
"We are at the start of the moment when things are going to start happening with stunning speed," Nail added, pointing to examples like Kodak, the former leader in film technology, being taken over by Instagram; and companies such as airbnb and Uber now being worth billions of dollars. Endit
