India not to make voting in general elections compulsory

The Indian government on Thursday ruled out any move to make voting in general elections compulsory in this country.

"At present, no proposal is under consideration of the government for mandatory voting in general elections," Indian Law Minister Sadananda Gowda told the parliament.

His response came in the wake of the country's Law Commission opposing any move to make voting in the elections compulsory.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat in western India is the only state which has made voting compulsory in local bodies polls. Endi
